Realistic tiger head on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large tiger's head faces forward, with its eye, nose and whiskers rendered in fine detail. Orange and brown fur is built up with black stripes and grey shading, and the dark background fill blends into the surrounding skin. The head fills most of the frame, cropped at the top and bottom, with the arm running diagonally through the image.

The customs clerk at Harrow Ford had stamped every cart and every goat that week, and he was still stamping when the tiger came down the far bank in the mist. Nobody wrote that part down. Later the sergeant said it walked like a man late for his own wedding, unhurried, its head low, the whiskers lit silver where the lantern caught them.

The rule at the ford was simple. Anything that crossed the river paid the toll, and the toll was a name spoken aloud at the white stone, so the stone could record which country had let it through. Men had given their names, their mothers' names, the names of dogs long dead. The tiger stopped in front of the stone and looked at the clerk with eyes the colour of old brass. The clerk said that tigers could not speak. Then he felt foolish for saying it to a tiger.
The ferrywoman, Ilse Varga, had kept the crossing for thirty years. She came out with her lamp and said the tiger had come from the forest on the hill, which belonged to no country at all. The clerk argued that every creature had to be somewhere on a map. Ilse told him to look at the stone, which was scratched with a hundred names, and that some of those scratches were stripes. Then she laid her hand on the animal's shoulder, and it let her.
In the morning there were paw prints on both banks, pressed deep into the mud, pointing in opposite directions. The clerk stamped nothing that day. Ilse went down to the water and found a new mark cut into the white stone, low down, where a small hand could reach it, and nobody could say whose it was.
