Tiger walking towards the viewer
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tiger advances toward the viewer, its head and direct gaze dominating the upper part of the design. Soft shading and dense striping build the fur texture, with the outline dissolving into grey wash at the edges. The tattoo uses only black and grey ink.

The gate chain rattles and you do not look away, because the keeper who looks away is the one who gets carried out. Sand is cold through your sandals, the crowd above is a noise like surf, and the animal comes out of the dark under the arch at a walk, not a run. Its shoulders roll. Stripes break across its face like cracks in dried mud, and its eyes hold yours as if it has already counted you.

Your master, Lucius, told you in the spring that tigers from the eastern ships were worth more than a villa, and that the crowd would pay to see one walk into the light. He did not say the beast would choose its own pace. You lift the goad and let it fall again. The tiger pauses, flicks its whiskers forward, and reads the air between you the way a fisherman reads water.
Behind you a boy starts to pray in a language you once spoke at home. The sand under your feet is damp from the morning sprinkle, and you feel each grain shift. You think of the river at Nisibis, and of how your mother used to stand between you and the dogs by simply not moving. So you do not move. You let the tiger come, close enough that you can smell its breath, close enough that its gaze fills the whole grey width of the arena.
It stops a stride away. Then it sits, slowly, like a magistrate, and the crowd, which has been roaring for blood, falls silent to see what you will do next.
