Black and grey realism tattoo of a tiger's head on a forearm, with an ornate mandala design near the wrist, shown in three photographs side by side.

Tiger head and mandala on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tiger's head with its eyes and whiskers is shaded in black and grey, filling most of the forearm, with dark stripes sweeping across the brow and cheeks. Soft gradients give the fur depth, and a detailed ornamental mandala sits above the wrist in bold, clean linework. The image is a three-panel collage showing the same forearm from slightly different angles, with a hand visible in the middle panel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tiger came down from the hills the same week the rains stopped, and my father said that was no coincidence. He kept the ledger for the tea estate at Nilgiri Bend, and he wrote everything down, the bags weighed, the coolies paid, the rain measured in brass cups on the veranda rail. The manager's wife wanted it shot. The Tamil foreman wanted it prayed to. My father wanted only to know what it was owed. He walked out with a tin of condensed milk and set it on the red earth halfway between them, and he came back and sat on the step and waited. By dusk the tiger had licked the tin clean and gone back into the teak, and in the morning there were prints in the mud around the sorting tables, every one of them pressed deep, as if the animal had been weighing something.

He never explained what the mandala meant, though he drew it for me once on the back of a wage slip. Rings inside rings, petals opening outward, a place for the eye to rest and then travel on. Keep your accounts like that, he said, and nothing will be lost that you were meant to keep.

The estate closed the following spring. The tiger, the foreman told me years later in Coimbatore, had walked out along the ridge road with the light on its back, and nobody had tried to stop it. I still have the ledger. The entry for that week says only: paid in full.
