The boats came back to Skerry Lee on the last of the light, and the women counted them in from the slipway the way their mothers had, one hand over their eyes. Seven hulls had gone out past the Holm that morning. Six came round the point. The seventh was the Brenda Ann, and her skipper was Tomas Gunn, who had never once in thirty years been late for his tea.

His daughter Ella walked the shingle until the tide turned her shoes wet. Then a white bird came in low over the water, wings held stiff, and dropped onto the harbour wall at her feet. It was a dove, plain as a bread roll, and it had a rose petal caught in one foot. Behind it came another, and another, until eleven doves sat along the wall like a row of washing pegs, all looking the same direction, out to sea.
Ella knew then what she was looking at. Her grandmother had kept doves on the roof of the net loft, and had said a dove will always find its way home, but only if somebody is holding the door. So she went to the loft and opened the hatch and stood in the cold with the lamp.
The Brenda Ann came in at first light with her hull scraped and her crew asleep on the deck. Tomas stepped onto the slip and found his daughter asleep herself, sitting on an upturned creel with a dove in her lap and a rose on the stone beside her, still wet with dew.
