Tiger head tattoo on upper chest
Traditional · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A bold tiger head with thick black outlines, grey and black stripes, a red open mouth and pale blue eyes fills most of the upper frame, on skin at the top of the chest near the shoulder. The lower half of the image shows a white tiger lying on dirt with the same head design digitally placed over its own head. Colour ink is limited to the red mouth and blue eyes, with the rest in black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dear Ruth, the tiger has refused his dinner since the lorry broke down outside Lincoln, and Father has decided the fault lies with his looks. So I have been given the paintbox and told to make Sultan presentable for Saturday's crowds, which meant spending this morning with my face close to a board, copying his features from the sheet of paper Father pinned to the caravan door.

The trouble was the eyes. Sultan's are amber, the colour of weak tea held up to a lamp, and nothing in the box would give me that. So I used the pale blue left over from the sky backdrop and a thick black outline round the whole head, the way the old sign-painters did on booth boards, so it would read from the far side of the field. Mr Oddie from the ferris wheel came over with his flask and called it the ugliest tiger in England. He may be right.
When the paint was dry I carried the board out to the paddock and propped it against the fence. Sultan came over slowly, stopped, and stared at it for a long while, the tip of his tail twitching. Then he lay down in the mud beside it, chin on his paws, the way he does by the stove in winter. Father says a cat that accepts its own likeness has made its peace with the world. I think he just wanted company that didn't smell of diesel.
I've hung the board on the front of the tent now, under the lamps, where the children can see it from the road. Come and look at it when you're back in March.
