The tiger had been on the ridge since the noon bell, and by the time the salt carters reached the foot of Harrow Scar, half of Vessaly had wagered on whether it would come down before dark. Nobody had ever seen a tiger climb. The royal menagerie kept its beasts in iron-barred yards behind the palace, and the keeper swore the animal had simply gone over the wall in the night, leaving a bloody gate and a scatter of straw.

Mirela Dunmore did not bet. She took a clay pitcher of water up the goat track at dusk, because her grandmother had told her that a creature on a height is always thirstier than it looks. The stone was wet from a day of mist, and the tiger's stripes ran over its shoulders like ink dragged through rainwater. It did not look at her. Its head was turned to the upper left, towards the far side of the valley, where a line of torchlight was crawling up the road from the coast.
She followed its gaze and understood the snarl. Soldiers in the king's grey were coming to take the quarry stone for the new harbour wall, and the ridge was the only thing between them and the village. The tiger had not fled up the rock. It had climbed to be seen.
Mirela set the pitcher on a flat slab and sat with her back against the warm flank of the beast. Neither of them moved while the torches came closer, and when the captain reached the bend in the road and saw a girl and a striped cat the size of a cart blocking the path, he stopped, then turned his men around without a word. By morning the ridge was grey and quiet again, and the pitcher was empty.
