Til my dying day script on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two fingers held together, each with a black script tattoo reading til my dying day, with one line on each finger. The lettering uses thin, even linework with a joined, handwritten feel. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a dark background, and the words run along the length of each finger.

Alwyn, you will say I have gone soft, and you will be right, but I have had the words put on me so you can't argue with them later. Mam always said a promise you can read is harder to wriggle out of. The man in the back room above the chemist on Market Street used a pen that buzzed like a wasp, and he kept the lettering thin and looping, the way you used to write my name on the back of the milk bottles.

You went off on the Cromer boat in March with a cardboard suitcase and a promise that you'd send for me by summer. Summer came and went, and the only post was a card of the lighthouse with nothing written on the back. I kept it in the biscuit tin with the buttons and the pier ticket stubs. Every evening I walked down to the harbour wall and counted the boats coming in, and every evening Mrs Pell asked me whether I'd given up on you yet.
So I sat in that chair with my two fingers pressed together, the way we used to hold hands crossing the marsh road. Don't make it look like a ransom note, I told him. He laughed and wrote the words out one finger then the other, so when I lay them flat they read as a single sentence broken across the knuckle.
I am writing to say the ink has settled and the words are still there, as black as the night you left. If you're reading this at the post office in Lowestoft with your bag at your feet, come home. The keeper's wife says the Cromer boat docks at seven. I'll be on the wall, and I'll be the one holding up my hand.
