Peace will win and fear will lose on fingers
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand held against a dark background shows two fingers, one reading peace will win and the other fear will lose, both in tattooed black lettering. The letters have a blackletter-like, gothic character with heavy, slightly feathered strokes. The ink is solid black, and the pale skin and white nail polish stand out against the dark backdrop, with the lettering running across the length of each finger.

Snow had buried the lane to Carrow Fell by four o'clock, and by nine the only sounds in the Bell and Lantern were the tick of the clock above the bar and the scrape of Maud Tarrant's chair as she counted the coins twice. The stranger had come in out of the blizzard with a leather case and a cough, asked for a room and a bottle of brandy, and paid in silver that had been clipped at the edges. She did not like him. She liked even less the way he kept rubbing two fingers of his left hand together, as though the skin there itched.

He sat by the fire until the logs were ash, then spread a worn deck across the table. "Cut for the room," he said. "If I win, you let me sleep above the cellar where the cold cannot reach. If you win, the case is yours." He tapped it with one knuckle. It sounded heavier than any case should.
Maud cut the ace. He turned his hand palm down on the wood, and she read the old black letters running along his fingers, PEACE WILL WIN on the one and FEAR WILL LOSE on the other, the strokes gone soft and feathered at the edges as if the ink had been pressed in by a hand that trembled. "Who told you that was true?" she asked. He smiled. "The man who taught me to read snow."
They played until the candle guttered. In the morning the case was gone, the cellar door stood open onto a drift, and on the table lay a single card, the joker, with a line written across its face in her own cramped hand: Tell them the lane is open. Maud read it twice, pulled her shawl tight, and went out into the white to dig.
