Traditional · Colour · Flash
A bold outlined drawing of a man with slicked back hair and a moustache, and a woman with pinned curls, a red flower in her hair and a pearl necklace, facing each other. Two red roses with green leaves sit at the bottom beneath a cream banner lettered TIMELESS LOVE. The linework is heavy and black with flat areas of red, yellow, cream and green on a white background.

The ink on the wall had faded to the colour of weak tea, but Nell could still make out the man's oiled hair and the thin line of his moustache, the woman's pearls and the red flower pinned above her ear. Her grandmother had called the picture flash, a design drawn fast and sold cheap so sailors could carry a little of home with them. Beneath the couple, two roses bled into a cream banner that read TIMELESS LOVE, the letters gone pink with age.

Nell had come to Calder Ring to find the parlour where her grandfather worked before the hull was sealed. The station logs listed it as Bay Seven, which now held seed stock in cold drawers and a pump that groaned every twelve minutes. She found the original sheet behind a loose panel, wrapped in plastic gone yellow and brittle at the corners. On the back, in her grandfather's cramped capitals, someone had written: DO NOT COPY THE BANNER. IT IS THE ONLY TRUE PART.
She carried the sheet to the wall and held it against the faded design. The lines matched like a key in a lock. Her grandfather had traced the couple from a photograph of two people who danced in a hall on Earth before anyone aboard was born, and he had inked the roses to hide a crack in the plaster. Nell had always assumed the lovers were invented. Now she saw the pencil ghost of an extra word under the banner, rubbed out and never replaced.
She took the chalk from her pocket and wrote that word beneath TIMELESS LOVE, the one she had been told never to say aloud: until. Then the pump kicked in again, and the couple went on looking at each other across the cold drawers as though nothing on the ring could ever wear them out.
