Sugar skull couple flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey drawing of two sugar skull figures: a woman with a flower in her hair and a man wearing a top hat, monocle and bow tie. Both have ornate skull faces and dark, sculpted hair. Bold outlines, stippled and striped shading and grey-toned roses and leaves frame the pair across the bottom of the composition on a plain white background.

You keep the lost property shelf at Halbeck Junction, and on the first of November the drawers always fill with things people forgot to come back for. Tonight it is a bridal veil folded in tissue, a pocket watch stopped at twenty past nine, and a pair of white gloves with one finger darned in blue thread. Nobody has claimed them in eleven years.

The night the 9.12 was cancelled, a man in a top hat stepped out of the rain and asked whether the last train to Carlisle was still running. His monocle caught the lamplight. Beside him stood a woman whose face was painted white, with black rings round her eyes and a paper marigold tucked behind one ear. She laughed at something he said, and the sound carried down the empty platform like a handbell.
You brought them tea in the chipped cups from the buffet and they sat on the bench under the clock. He asked you to hold the watch while he retied his shoelace, and it was warm, as if someone had only just let go of it. The woman turned the gloves over in her lap. "We were meant to be on this line in 1963," she said, "for our honeymoon. He missed the train. I didn't forgive him for years, and then I did."
When the milk train came through at six, the platform was empty except for two cups on the bench and a single white glove lying beside them. You put the glove on the shelf with the veil. Some mornings the drawer hums a little tune, and you have stopped asking who is humming it.
