Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close street-style photograph of a person's ankle and foot, with a small black tattoo of Hebrew lettering sitting above the ankle bone. At two o'clock a girl with a torn carrier bag ducked under my stall and asked whether I could write a word on a scrap of card for her mother's birthday. She had a pencil behind one ear and a look of someone who had run the whole length of the market. I wrote the word she dictated, small and careful, the way Father taught us to letter the price tags. When she asked what it meant, I did not know how to say it in English, so I told her it was a bird that always comes back.

The rain stopped at four. A real sparrow came down off the wire above the fish crates and sat on the rim of my tin of pins, shaking itself dry and looking at me as though I owed it rent. I thought of you on that boat, and how you wrote that you could not sleep for the gulls screaming over the stern.

I am keeping the spare card. It sits in the glass of my till, next to the change. When the market closes I will post this letter without a stamp, because you always said a letter should arrive the way a bird does, by accident and all at once. Write back soon. Miriam.
