The departure board at Halden Junction had been flicking for ten minutes, and Maureen Oakes was the only person on the concourse still watching it. A boy came to the hatch with a rucksack clutched against his chest like a sleeping dog. He had missed the train his mother was on, he said, and she had gone without him, and he wanted to know which way the next one left. Maureen didn't look at the board. She lifted one hand and drew a straight line through the air towards the far end of the platforms, then stopped and pushed the point back toward the ticket office, as if the thing had two ends and she only trusted one of them.
The boy frowned. "Which is it?"
"Follow the shaft," she said, "not the feathers. The feathers are only how you know it's been fired." He stared at her, then at the arrow she had doodled on the back of a lost-property slip, and went off at a run, the rucksack bouncing.
She rang the bell for the next shift, sipped the cold tea, and watched him through the glass until the crowd swallowed him on platform six, the way the crowd always did. She wrote nothing down.
