A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last cold night on Harrow Ridge, Maud Ashgrove sent her grandson to the orchard for a forked stick, and he came back with one that had already been burned black at the tip. She said nothing about it. She only pulled the stool closer to the stove-glass and told him the old way: that the Tenders of the Ridge had kept a fire going through the Long Dark by roasting one soft sweet thing each year, and passing the stick hand to hand, so no one ever ate alone.

The boy asked what the sweet thing was made from. Maud said nobody living knew any more, only that it had been pale and round and cost a great deal of work to keep from falling apart. Her own mother had called it a cloud on a branch. The Tenders had argued over it for generations, some saying it was a kind of seed, others that it came from the far valley where the Glass Rivers ran. The stick they kept in a tin box under the floor, and it had a split fork like a hind leg, and a smooth knot where thumbs had worn it bright.

When the fire had burned down to red, Maud took a grey-white dome from the cold cellar jar, threaded it on the fork, and held it over the coals until its skin turned the colour of old copper. She gave the stick to the boy. He did not bite it. He watched the surface tighten and gleam, and he understood that she had never been hungry for the sweetness at all, only for the hour when someone younger held the stick and waited.
