Fine line tattoo of a sewing needle with a dashed thread forming an infinity loop, on the forearm.

Needle and infinity thread on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sewing needle with its eye threaded by a dashed line that loops into an infinity symbol and trails off at the top. The linework is fine and dotted, in black ink, while the needle body has soft grey shading that gives it some dimension. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a blurred, patterned background, with the design running diagonally across the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass bell over the kitchen door at Carrick House rang three times that Tuesday, which meant the Hollis sisters wanted their sheets turned before the tide came in. I had the needle between my teeth and a wet hem under my thumb when Mrs Penrose put her head round the scullery door and asked whether I had seen her mother's needle.

It was the long steel one she kept in the tin with the broken clasp, the one that had darned every sock in the house since the war. I found it in the lining of my own apron pocket, its eye already threaded with navy cotton that ran out of the door, down the stairs and along the skirting board, as though someone had been following a dotted line on a map. I followed it too. It looped through the hallway, doubled back under the wireless, made a figure of eight around the legs of the piano stool, and came back to my hand as if it had never left.

Mrs Penrose said thread like that only ever went one way, which was round again, and told me to cut it. I did not. The sisters came down at six and the thread still ran, so I let it sit in my lap while I stitched their cuffs one slow stitch at a time, and the loop never seemed to get any shorter.

By lamplight I had mended every sheet in Carrick House, and the thread still lay coiled at my feet like a sleeping eel. I drew the needle through one last time and watched the dashed line run out across the floorboards, over the threshold and into the dark, where the tide was coming in and nobody was left to ask me to stop.
