Top hat, pocket watch and rabbits design

Mixed · Flash

A black ink linework design on a sepia, aged paper background. Motifs include a lace-patterned top hat at the base, a pocket watch on a chain, rabbits, clouds with raindrops, a teacup, a cupcake and a feather. A stylised face with red hair and blue eyes appears at the bottom edge, with the mostly black drawing and red hair giving the image its colour.

The hat is the last thing the Fenwick and Gall Travelling Wonder still owns outright, and you are the one who has to sell it. Ada Pellow, who has run the wardrobe since before the big top leaked, wraps it in tissue paper on the trestle and tells you the buyer from Bristol will pay for the lace, not the lining. You nod. You have nodded at every buyer this winter.

The rabbits went first. Six white ones, bred to vanish into the hat and come out again at the matinee, sold in October to a petting farm in Shropshire for less than the feed bill. The brass pocket watch that used to hang over the ring and tick the acts on and off stopped the night the generator died. You kept winding it anyway, because a clock with a dead hand is a kind of confession, and you have never been much of a confessor. Now it sits on a nail in the caravan, still ticking the wrong hour.

On the last night you climb into the empty ring with the hat under your arm and find two rabbits have come back, grey with age, nibbling sawdust by the exit flap. The tent is gone but the sky is clean and the rain has stopped. Ada's teacups are still stacked by the water urn, and a cupcake under a glass dome has gone hard as a stone. You stand there with the lace warm against your ribs and understand the act was never the rabbits. It was always the hat deciding what came out next.
