Torn skin and exposed flesh on the nape
Realism · Neck · Colour · Photo
A rear view of a person with shaved sides and bright red hair, showing a large tattoo on the back of the head and upper neck. The design depicts torn skin peeling back to reveal layered, textured flesh with dark shadowed areas, and red lines running down into the neck. The shading is detailed and tonal, set against pale skin, with ear gauges and another tattoo visible at the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The Bramley trees on the east slope have split their bark again since the drought broke, and Mr Haddon says it is the frost that did it, but I think the wet got in under the skin first. You would laugh at me for saying so. Last Tuesday I found a windfall with its peel gone soft and lifting at one edge, like wallpaper coming off a damp wall, and beneath it the flesh was ruddy and folded in on itself, weeping a clear juice down the side of the crate.
I took it to the cider barn in my apron pocket because I did not want the others picking through it. Tobias was there, mending the press with that bent screwdriver of his, and he looked at the thing in my palm and said the wasps had been at it in the night, which is what he says about everything he does not want to look at twice. He is not wrong. But the wasps had gone, and the shape of the split was too neat, a flap folded back exactly to the stalk, as if someone had started to open a letter and thought better of it.
I kept it on the windowsill of the packing shed. By Friday it had dried to a dark leather that rattled when the door slammed, and I could not bring myself to throw it on the heap. Do you remember the tin where your mother kept her buttons? It is in there now, with the split apple wrapped in a handkerchief, and I find I look at it most evenings before I lock up.
I am coming down to the coast at the end of the month. Tell the landlady I will be bringing my own knife for the peeling.
Love, Maud
