Torn skin reveal with blue NY logo on a leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows blue, white and red stylised letters that appear to tear through the skin, with ragged edges and shaded flaps around the design. The lettering uses bold outlines and white highlights, with soft blue shading across the forms. The design is centred on the outer calf and fills most of the frame against a plain background.

Brother Anselm, you will think me mad, but the capital I painted for the Psalter last Thursday has split the vellum. I had laid the ultramarine as Abbot Osric asked, a deep blue thinned with egg, and the white highlights I picked out with a goose quill no thicker than a barleycorn. When the gold leaf was pressed on, the letter did not sit flat. It rose. The edges curled back like bark, and beneath the skin of the page a second letter showed through, red-edged and bright, as though the parchment were only a wrapping.

Brother Tobias wants it scraped. He says the Abbot will have us both on bread and water until Lent ends. But I have held the sheet to the candle and I cannot find where the paint ends and the calf begins. The torn flaps are shaded so cleanly that my fingers want to press them down.
Yesterday I went to the scriptorium before Lauds and found the page turned to the wall, the ink pot knocked over, and the vellum slit in long diagonal rents, as if a hand had raked through it from the top corner. Nobody will own to it. The brothers are frightened, and so am I.
I have written the letter out again on fresh skin, plain and careful, and I will set it on the lectern tomorrow. Pray for me, and burn this when you have read it.
