LA Kings logo and crown on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several LA Kings hockey emblems, including the LA crest, a crown, a shield and the words Los Angeles KINGS, arranged within a large outline of the state of California. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and layered in greys, with strong black areas in the lettering and crown. The design runs vertically up the lower leg, with the crown filling the lower section.

Saturday was the first home game since the new kit came in. The crowd at Westbrook was loud enough to rattle the glass in the penalty box, and every time the Crowns scored, the whole upper tier stood up together like a wave folding over. Dolan, who has run the equipment room since before the roof was fixed, took me down after the final buzzer and showed me his stencil drawer. Forty years of sheets of card, all cut to the same outline of the state, with the crown sitting at the bottom where the land runs out into the sea. He said the crown was always the hardest part because it had to be small enough to hold in your head and still look like it could pull a crowd.
He handed me one, still warm from the press. I held it up against the harbour lights through the window and the cut edges glowed. I can't tell you what it means to him, only that he kept it in his coat all week. I'm going to ask Dolan to tell me the rest of that story the next time I'm down with the sticks. Love, Ellie.
