Blue 3D letterforms torn through skin on chest
Lettering · Chest · Colour · Photo
A chest tattoo of blue, three-dimensional block letterforms with bright highlights and dark shadow edges. The lettering appears to break through a ripped opening in the skin, with red tones showing underneath the tear. The shading is smooth and the colour is vivid, framed by the upper chest in a close, slightly angled photograph.

Dev had the cap off the blue before the lorry lights had swung past the arch, and he was already drawing the shadow side of the R before the chalk line was dry. They worked fast, the way you have to when the railway police walk the far end every forty minutes. Dev built the blocks outward, one face bright as a swimming pool, the other sunk into black. He wanted them to look like they had been pushed up from behind the brick, splitting the grey paint the way a seed splits tarmac. Nell sprayed the red underneath, a rough wet crimson that made the tear look like it had bled first.
By three the word stood out from the wall, a little too sure of itself. Dev stepped back with paint on his cheek and waited for the feeling of being finished. It didn't come. Instead he saw the gap at the foot of the E, where he had left the ground bare, and he understood what it was missing. Nell was already screwing the cap onto her last can. "It's yours now," she said, and rolled the empty tin into the drain.
