Torn skin revealing Latin text on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare male arm bent at the elbow shows a tattoo of skin peeling back to reveal dense columns of Latin script beneath. The lettering and torn edges are rendered in fine black and grey shading, with pinkish skin tones along the tears giving depth. The composition fills the upper arm and elbow, with the torso partly visible at the right edge.

The tide has taken the causeway again, so you wade the last stretch with a sack of vellum held above your head and Brother Edric's complaints following you across the flats. The leaf you pulled from the wreck of the old scriptorium is stiff with salt. You lay it on the flat stone beside the boathouse and see that the damp has eaten the margin away, leaving one dense column bare to the wind: ANIMA, GLADIUS, QUATTUOR, words that have waited four hundred years for someone to read them aloud.

Edric taught you to read the hand before the sense. The scribe pressed hard on the downstrokes and lifted quick on the hairlines, so you could tell a tired man from a frightened one. This one was neither. Every line ran hard toward the edge, as if it expected to be torn out and carried off, and you thought of the sea that had been worrying at the island since before there was a monastery to lose its books.
You work through the afternoon with a bone folder and a pot of warm size, easing back the flakes the damp has curled. Gulls come and go over the mudflats. Near dusk the wind swings round and the page lifts off the stone. You catch it against your chest and hold it there until the wind drops, the faded Latin pressed against your coat like a second layer of paper.
Edric is waiting at the gate with a lamp. He lifts it and squints at what you carry. "Lost one?" he asks. "No," you say, and hold the leaf up to the light, where the ink shows through from the back and the words read clear again, the way they always did before the water came.
