Totoro with umbrella on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A sketch-style tattoo of the character Totoro holding a blue and green umbrella, shown on the outer upper arm. Loose black linework with grey shading forms the figure, with stray lines radiating around it. A pink brush-stroke wash runs down behind the design, and the photograph shows a striped top and a stormtrooper helmet image in the background.

Every wet morning in November, Ada Tully lit the oven in the dark and listened for the knock. The bakery stood where Scarrow Lane ran out into the wood, and the rain there came down sideways, so no one walked past before six. She kept the back door on the latch and the kettle warm.

The first time, she found a dent the size of a loaf pressed into the flour sacks and a trail of wet leaves across the flags. The second time, a grey shape taller than the door stood in the yard with a blue umbrella held over its head by one great paw. It did not come in. It looked at the bread cooling on the sill the way a child looks at a shop window, and then it looked at her, and she gave it a cob wrapped in a tea towel. Each morning after that the towel was folded on the step, and in its place lay a sprig of fern or a single acorn, polished smooth.
Tom thought she had gone soft in the head until the winter the mill race burst and the flour went damp in the store. That night the rain was loud enough to drown the oven. Ada was hauling the last sack across the yard alone when the umbrella tilted over her shoulder, blue ribs creaking, and stayed there while she finished. She did not turn around. She had learnt that much.
When the sky greyed over Scarrow Lane, the umbrella was propped against the step with its handle bent to a hook, and the rain had stopped. Ada cut the first loaf, and the whole kitchen smelled of fern and rising dough.
