Red creature with crown on lower leg
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A red and orange creature with a gold crown and a wide, toothed mouth is tattooed on a lower leg, with thin spiky legs extending down the skin. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the shading uses smooth gradients of red and orange. The design fills most of the frame, with a faint darker shape of another element at the upper left.

The king of Hallen Sands came up out of the low tide every spring with his gold crown set crooked, and the whole town bolted its doors, because he never came alone and he never came hungry. I was twelve the year the tithe bell rang and my father sent me down to the flats with a basket of mussels and a promise I had not yet learned to regret.

The crab-king was no beast to my father's eyes. He was a tax collector with a voice like wet gravel, and his mouth, a ring of grey-white teeth that clicked when he spoke, opened like the gates of a castle. He wanted the mussels. He wanted the salt-bread too. My hands were shaking so badly that I offered him the basket and then, out of desperation, my own cap, which had a brass button shaped like a crown.
He turned the cap over with a leg as thin and spiky as a rake. Then he laughed, a dry rattle, and said that Hallen had never once been fed by its own fear. He handed the cap back and told me to climb onto his shell. I did. We crossed the flats in the last red light while the gulls wheeled overhead like scraps of torn sail.
At the tideline he set me down, lifted his crown from his head and placed it on mine. It was far too big and slid over my ears. 'Collect the tithes,' he said, 'and give them away.' My father still laughs about the day I came home with a crown and an empty basket. I still have the crown. It is only brass, but it holds the colour of the tide at sunset.
