Tobias Greave had cut the thorned hedge along the edge of Wyke Wood every autumn for thirty-one years, and in all that time it had never once flowered. So when a bud split open on the third of May, dark at its heart and pale at its rim, he left his billhook on the stile and walked the long way round to the cottage at the end of Mill Lane to tell Nell Pardoe before anyone else in the village could.

Nell was on her knees in the vegetable plot, working at bindweed with a fork. She did not look up. "It was always going to, once the lane stopped being walked," she said. "Your father knew that. He cut it back anyway, same as you do." Her hands were brown to the wrist and perfectly steady. She had been the midwife once, and later the one who laid out the dead, and folk in Wyke said she knew what the wood was for, though none of them had ever asked her.
They went back together along the path. The rose stood in a cloud of wasps and small brown birds, its petals so black they seemed to swallow the light, the pale veins across them like frost on a windowpane. Its stem curled down into the bracken and finished in a tight spiral, thorns standing out along it like nails in a coffin lid. Tobias reached for the nearest leaf. Nell caught his wrist and held it. "Leave the thorns be. It was never the bloom that kept the wood. It was always the ones who came in to pick it."
He stood there until the light went, then carried his billhook home, hung it on its peg unsharpened, and did not go back to the stile that year.
