Hatched rose design with leaves
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A rose seen from slightly above, with its petals drawn as layered outlines and filled with fine cross-hatching for shading. Three pointed leaves with hatched shading sit around the base, with small ink dots and short strokes scattered at the edges. The drawing is in black ink on a plain grey background, with the composition centred and the bloom filling most of the frame.

The cutting came aboard at Valparaiso wrapped in wet sacking, and by the time the Ardent Mary had rounded the Horn it had put out three leaves and a bud no bigger than a thumbnail. You kept it in a biscuit tin on the galley sill, where the lamp could reach it, and Hollis, the cook who had shared your watch for eleven years, said it was bad luck to carry a flower to sea. You told him the flower had not asked to come.

By the fortieth day the bud had opened into something that watched. In the centre of the bloom a dark hollow sat like a pupil, and when the carpenter swore it followed him across the deck, you laughed, then stopped laughing, because you had felt it too: a steadiness, as if the petals were folded around a question nobody had got round to asking.
Off the Falklands a sea came over the rail and the tin went over with it. You went down the ladder with a lantern and found the rose lying on the wet boards, its petals still layered tight, its centre still turned toward the light. The stem had cracked clean. You wrapped it in your own oilskin and pinned it inside your coat for the rest of the passage, and nobody aboard said a word about luck after that.
The Ardent Mary made Tilbury in June. The customs men went through the chests and never thought to look inside your coat. The rose went into a paper twist, then into a window box in Gravesend, and each summer it still opens with its dark centre turned toward the river, as if it is counting the ships.
