Traditional flash collage with skull and pin-ups
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A dense collage of traditional-style tattoo designs filling the whole frame. The central purple skull sits over a red heart and a banner reading LOVE KILLS SLOWLY, surrounded by pin-up women, a koi fish, a mermaid, a green dragon head, roses and a tiger. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colours in red, pink, yellow, blue and green run across the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit closer to the stove, and mind that dog, it has no manners. You want the story of the sheet pinned over the bar? Then hush. Tobias Quayle drew every bit of flash on this island, on the backs of old chart paper he got from the ferry office, and he kept his ink in a biscuit tin under the stairs at the Crown and Anchor. Nobody asked him for anything but roses and anchors until the spring Ada Mirren came off the boat with a purse full of coins and a list in her head.

She wanted everything at once, she said. A koi from her father's pond that swam backwards in the rain. A mermaid combing her hair out on the rocks. A devil woman in red, because Ada had been one at seventeen and never regretted it. A green dragon head like the one carved on the prow of the Mary Gall, and tigers, and flames licking up from the bottom of the page like the stove at a wake. Tobias sat with his brush dry for an hour. Then he said, Ada, all of that wants a heart in the middle. And she said, Then give it one, and make it lie.
So he drew a red heart, and across it a banner, and under the banner a purple skull grinning with every tooth it had, and the words LOVE KILLS SLOWLY in letters the width of a finger. He painted the pin-ups round the edges, a dozen of them, each with a different hairstyle, and Ada tapped the table and laughed until she had to wipe her eyes.
She took the sheet home, and the next spring she sent a postcard from Lisbon that said only: still slow, still kills, mind the tide. The paper's gone yellow now and the ink's gone soft, but the skull still grins down at the bar. Go on, get your coat. The tide turns at ten.
