Mandala flower on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large mandala-style flower with layered orange and yellow petals, a dark centre ringed in pink, and teal and green leaves around its outer edge. Bold black outlines define the shapes, and the shading is flat with soft highlights. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame on the upper arm, with a dark top behind the shoulder.

The dahlia had been fussing for three weeks before the Harvest Show, and by Thursday Ada Pritchard had stopped sleeping properly. She crept out before dawn to the allotment behind the chapel in Little Hadley, tipping rainwater over the bed and flicking slugs off the stems with a bent fork, muttering at the rows as though they were a choir she was failing to conduct.

The bloom had come up gold at its outer edges and paler towards its heart, with a dark centre ringed in pink so bright the vicar's wife said it looked painted on. Ada had never painted anything in her life. She had only fed the thing, watched it, and steered the other growers away when they leaned in too long. Teal-backed leaves spread out beneath it like the fins of something that had decided to stay put.

On judging morning, Mr Dunstable came up from Spalding with a pencil behind his ear and lifted each petal with the tip of it, the way a man might test ice. He reached the dark centre, grunted, and reached for the first-place card. Ada asked him, quite politely, if he would pin it to the stake instead, so the flower could be seen where it had grown.

He did. By evening the rosette was flapping on the fence beside the chapel wall, and the pink ring caught the last of the sun, and Ada stood at the gate with her hands in her coat pockets, not sleeping, not needing to.
