Purple rose and flower bouquet with ribbon on arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of two purple roses, orange and pink five-petal flowers and teal leaves, with small yellow dots and buds, fans out across the arm. The bouquet is tied at the base with a heart-shaped locket and teal ribbons, all outlined in bold black linework with flat, solid colour fills. The palette is bright and pastel-leaning, and the design fills the frame diagonally against a plain skin backdrop.

The Mallow road closed the week before Candlemas, and Hester Pell came up it anyway, on foot, with a bouquet tucked under her coat. Two purple roses sat at the heart of it, orange and pink flowers fanning out around them, the stems bound with teal ribbon and a little heart-shaped locket. She had not bought it. She had grown it, she said, in a window box above the chandler's, and kept it alive through three frosts by breathing on it at night.

Nell, the innkeeper's girl, did not believe a word of it. Nobody grows roses in January, she said, unless they are sorry about something. Hester only unclasped the locket and held it to the lamp. Inside was no portrait, just a strip of paper folded small, and on it, in pencil: Ribbon long enough to tie a road home.

That was the year the lake froze so hard the children skated to the far shore and back for their supper. Hester stayed through the thaw. She taught Nell to tie the teal ribbons into a bow that would not slip, and together they wrapped the roses in brown paper for the widow in the valley who had sent for them years before and never paid.

When the snow finally let go of the Mallow road, the bouquet was gone from the table. Nell found the locket on the windowsill with the paper still inside, the pencil line gone faint. Beneath it, someone had written in a neater hand: Paid in full.
