Traditional heart, cabin and portrait flash on a wooden hand
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
Black ink tattoo-style designs are drawn on a wooden artist's hand model. The main design on the palm is a beaded heart enclosing a cabin, pine trees and mountains, with two crossed axes. The base of the stand shows two profile portraits above a flower and a banner, and the fingers carry lettering.

The chimney smoked again, so Dad climbed up with the pitch bucket and I held the ladder steady, which was the only job he trusted me with. Below us the valley was grey with October, and the pines along the ridge kept shedding needles onto the roof as if they were trying to help.

Aunt Verity came up the track that afternoon with a wooden hand under one arm, the jointed kind painters use to hold a pose. She had spent a year in the town and come back with ideas, and she had decided a hand with no sleeve was a sort of blank page. She sat on the step with a pen and a bottle of ink and started on the palm while Mother shelled beans and pretended not to watch.
She drew a heart first, beaded all the way round like a rosary, then a cabin inside it with a crooked chimney, mountains behind, and two axes crossed at the sides. On the fingers she wrote LOVE and WOOD in letters that leaned like tired men. 'Who's it for?' I asked. 'Nobody yet,' she said. 'It's practice.'
Dad came down at dusk, black to the elbows, and looked at the hand for a long time. Then he carried it inside and set it on the mantel, and the next morning our smoke went straight up as if someone had finally told it which way to go. Verity says it was the drawing. Mother says it was the pitch. I think the hand simply pointed the way.
