Musical notes tattoo on a leg and ankle
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A bare leg and foot on a white background show a music-themed tattoo. A gold and orange treble clef with scattered notes sits on the lower leg, while a black stave with purple and black treble clefs and notes wraps around the ankle, with dark swirling linework across the top of the foot. The black linework is combined with purple, gold and teal accents, and the composition is a side view of the leg from calf to foot.

The violin upstairs had been sawing the same four bars for a week, and Maureen Okafor had started hearing it in the lift. Ninth floor of Halden House, where the lift smelt of bleach and somebody's chips. She counted the bars on her fingers the way her father used to count bus stops.

On Thursday she knocked on the door of flat fourteen. A boy of about eleven answered, the violin tucked under his chin even while he talked. He said his name was Dev and his nan had gone to bingo. A stave was drawn in biro on the back of his hand, the lines smudged where he'd washed, and a treble clef curled at the wrist like a question mark. "It goes wrong at the turn," he said. "Where it's meant to go up and it goes down."
Maureen had tuned pianos for forty years before her knuckles stiffened. She asked him to play it again, slowly. The fifth note sagged flat because his finger sat too high on the string. She showed him how to shift his wrist an inch, and the sound rose clean and bright, like a gold note lifting off the page.
Back in her own flat she found the old tuning fork in the drawer under the tea towels and struck it against her knee. The hum travelled through the wall and up the stairwell, and somewhere above her a violin answered it.
