Grey rose wrist tattoo with filigree
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are crossed at the wrists against a plain white background. A large rose is tattooed on the wrist and lower forearm, shaded in black and grey with soft gradients across the petals. The rose is framed by swirling ornamental filigree that extends beyond it on both sides.

Dear Ruth, the gate for Calder Street is finished, and I have spent the whole evening watching the smith's lamp through the workshop window across the road. We cast the rose in iron for the lych-gate, grey as a February sky, and the scrollwork around it curls out like the ends of a fern. You said I would never finish the commission. I did, though it nearly finished me.

Mr Okonedo, who owns the foundry, lifted the rose out of the mould with bare hands and only swore once. Grey, he kept saying, you cannot make a rose grey and expect it to look dead. You have to let the shadows pool soft in the petals, the way rain sits on a windowsill. I thought of that when the foundry's last bulb went out and the drizzle started on the cobbles. I stood under the bus shelter with a bag of offcuts and the delivery note in my coat pocket, and I could still smell the flux.
The filigree was the hard part. Every curl had to be thin enough to bend to the pattern and strong enough to hold a child's weight, so he made me weld each one by hand while he checked the angles with a pencil behind his ear. By midnight my wrists ached and the lace of iron rang where the hammer struck it, a small bright note that went on long after the hammer stopped.
Tomorrow the gate goes up, and the woman who ordered it will push it open and find the rose on the far side, facing the road. Write back and tell me whether a thing made to be looked at can still be looked after. Yours, Nell.
