The paste had to rest overnight, Auntie Rukhsana said, or it would crack like old paint when the lemon hit it. Mira sat on the back step of the shop on Belgrave Road with the paste cones lined up in a biscuit tin and watched the sodium lamps come on one by one down the street.

"The first pattern was never a flower," the old woman said, lowering herself onto the step beside her. "It was a drop of water falling on dry clay. It dries with a curl at the tail, like that. My mother drew it on the palm of a girl who was going to a city she had never seen, and the curl was meant to point the way home."

"Which way does it point now?" Mira asked.

"Wherever the drawer is facing when she draws it. That's the trick. You draw slowly, and you keep your own back to the door." Rukhsana tapped the tin with one bent finger. "Otherwise everyone who wears it spends their life looking over their shoulder."

Mira worked in the back room until the clock over the mosque struck four, filling scroll after scroll with dense black paisley and leaving small gaps open between the petals for the light to get in. When she finally held the mirror up, every curl she had drawn was leaning toward the door. She sat with the cone in her hand for a long moment, then turned the whole thing around, feeling the paste cool and tighten, until the tails pointed at the window and the first bus of the morning was grinding past under the lamps.
