Traditional heart with HOLD ON banner

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red heart sits across the middle of the design, with a teal banner reading HOLD ON wrapped over its centre. Yellow and purple flowers with teal leaves fill the spaces around the heart. Bold black outlines, solid fills and soft red shading give the piece a classic flash look, and it is shown in close-up on the skin.

The sea had been flat all morning, which Ada Pengelly didn't trust. She stood on the slipway at Porthkerris with the spare line coiled over one arm, watching her brother Tom wave a red flag from the headland. The lamp at the end of the pier had been dead since Tuesday, because the council was still arguing about who paid for the bulb.

The call came just after two. A coble had gone over off the Gull Rocks, with two men in the water and a third clinging to the upturned hull. Ada took the rope from the shed herself, because her father's knees would no longer hold him on the wet stones. Her mother pressed a twist of ginger biscuits into her coat pocket and said nothing, the way she always did when she was frightened.

Out past the breakwater the swell lifted the boat like a hand under a plate. Ada got the line across on her third throw, and the nearest man caught it with fingers gone white. "Hold on," she shouted, and her voice came out in her father's gruff tone, the one that had hauled a generation of crews off these rocks. The man did hold on, hand over hand, until the crew could drag him aboard. By dusk all three were in the infirmary at the top of the village, and the tide had turned in their favour.

Ada found the biscuits later, crushed to crumbs, and ate them sitting on the harbour wall while a new bulb was finally screwed into the lamp. Its light fell across the water in a long yellow path. She coiled the rope again, slow and careful, and hung it on the hook by the shed door where it would be dry for the next call.
