Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A red heart and an orange heart sit side by side, crossed by a teal banner reading NOT YOU, with a black spider web above and a black spider below. Dark green leaves and small red and orange berries frame the design. Bold black outlines and smooth shading sit against bright red, orange and teal fills on a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mairi Gunn had the red heart and Ailsa Rowe had the orange one, and between their two doors on Skerrow there was only a gap of wet stone and a single black spider who lived in the lintel above the chapel gate. Every morning she spun her web fresh across that gap, grey threads hung with salt, and every morning Calum the fiddler walked straight into it on his way to play for whichever woman had lit the better lamp that night.

Nobody on the island could say which of the two he meant. He played Mairi a reel on Monday and Ailsa a slow air on Tuesday, and by Friday they had both stopped speaking to him and to each other. Old Janet at the pier said the spider had taken sides. The women laughed at her, then went home and found strips of sailcloth pushed under their doors, each one inked in the same careful hand with the same two words: NOT YOU.

Calum swore he had written nothing. He sat on the seawall with his fiddle across his knees and watched the gulls come down on the web to tear at the threads, and the spider simply went on mending. When the storm came in from the west she did not run. She hung herself in the middle of the gap, dark as a stone, and held the two houses together with her silk until the shutters stopped banging.

In the spring Mairi and Ailsa sat on the same wall with their feet in the tide and read the sailcloth strips aloud, until they were both laughing too hard to finish. Calum never learned who had written the words. Above them the web still hung across the gap, and the spider waited, patient as a bell, for someone to walk into it again.
