Pink heart outline and teal flower on wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two figures in pink single-line outline, one overlapping the other inside a heart shape. A teal and turquoise flower with green leaves sits to the left of the heart. The linework is unshaded, and the pink and teal ink are set against lightly lit skin, with the design placed near the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boat at Skerry Nor carried only two sorts of passenger in my time, those leaving and those coming back for something they had forgotten. Mrs Ailsa Reid was the second sort. Every Thursday she came down the slip with her granddaughter's hand in hers, the child so wrapped against the spray that all I could see of her was a red woollen hat and two scuffed boots kicking at the thwart.

They were going across to the old cottage on the Little Holm, where the thrift grew pink along the cliff edge and the gentians came up blue in late summer. Ailsa never said much on the crossing. She sat with her chin lifted into the wind and her eyes on the far rock. Once, when the sea lay flat, I saw her trace a shape in the wet on the thwart with one finger: two figures leaning together inside a heart. The girl copied it with a stub of chalk from her pocket, round and round until the lines wore off the wood.

The Thursday after the spring gales, Ailsa did not come down the slip. The child did, alone, with her hat pulled low and something folded small in her fist. She held it out without a word. It was the heart drawn on the back of a tide table, the two figures pressed so hard the pencil had torn the paper. "Gran says it's for whoever's waiting at the slip," she said. "So you're to keep it."

I rowed her across anyway. We knelt at the cottage door and she pushed a blue gentian into the turned earth with both thumbs, then sat back on her heels and waited, as if someone might come up the path. When we pushed off, the light was going gold on the water, and I looked back once to see her small figure still at the top of the cliff, one hand lifted against the sun.
