Traditional red and blue flowers with leaves

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

Two photographs show the same traditional-style tattoo of red flowers, a blue flower with a dark centre, green leaves and yellow accents. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid colour fills and soft shading on the petals. The left photo shows the tattoo on a leg above a trainer, and the right shows it on an arm beside a purple sleeve.

The officer at Saltmarsh crossing had already unzipped Edie Marsh's holdall twice, and she kept her hands flat on the counter so he could see they were empty. Under her cardigan, wrapped in a tea towel, was the biscuit tin. Inside it, packed in damp moss, lay three rooted cuttings from her mother's border: two of the scarlet poppies with their black-hearted throats, one of the blue cranesbills her mother called Mrs Ferris's eyes, and a sprig of the sage-green foliage that refused to die in any weather.

"Anything to declare?" he asked, not looking up from the screen.

"Only my mother," Edie said, and because it was half true, he waved her on. She drove the last twelve miles with the tin on the passenger seat, taking the bends slowly, the way her mother had driven the lane to the market with a crate of eggs and a face like a locked door. Her mother had always said flowers would cross any border if you gave them a reason to stay put.

That evening Edie dug a bed against the south wall of the cottage, where the bricks held the day's heat until midnight. She set the cuttings in the dark soil, watered them from a jug, and sat on the step until her knees complained.

Three mornings later, a red bloom had opened against the brick, its petals crimped and bright as a fresh coat of paint, and the blue one had come up beside it looking as if it had always lived there.
