Traditional rose and pocket watch on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A traditional style tattoo on the thigh shows red roses, a pocket watch and a scrolled banner with the words time is what we make of it. Bold black outlines and solid fills are used, with green leaves adding colour and some shading in the petals. The wearer holds a beige dress up with both hands, and the design fills the lower half of the frame.

Old Tobias Fenn had mended every clock in Hollin Wood for forty years, and the last one he could not mend was his own. It ran a quarter hour behind, no matter how often he opened the case and bent over it with his glass in his eye.

One wet March a stranger came up the forest road with a satchel of letters and asked for the clockmaker by name. She wanted him to slow the hours in her garden so her roses would keep their petals a week longer. He told her the roses kept their own time, and that a watch was only a promise the wheel made to the sun.
She laughed at that and left him a silver penny and a rose cut from the bush by her gate, its stem wrapped in damp moss. He set the rose in a jar on the bench and forgot it for three days.
On the fourth morning the bloom had opened fully, red as a coal, and the pocket watch on the bench had stopped at the moment he last wound it, which was the hour his wife had died. He had never let it stop before. He read the words scratched inside the lid, which he had always thought a silly saying, and laughed for the first time in a year.
He wound the watch, set it to the true hour, and carried the rose out to the lane. Whatever he made of the time that was left, he decided, would be his own.
