I worked on it at the kitchen table with the radio low and the window open a crack for the cold. Bone takes its time. I scraped the last of the muscle from the brow, picked out the teeth one at a time, and each time the blade slipped I heard Gran saying a thing isn't finished until someone has looked at it properly. On the walk back from the canal I'd pulled a handful of cow parsley and a few late foxgloves from the verge, and I wired them around the jaw, leaves turned outward as if the whole thing wanted to get back to the hedge.

Danny came back near one with a bottle of cheap cider and asked what I meant to do with it. I said I didn't know yet. He said his mum had kept a fox like that once, and it had gone in the bin the morning after the funeral, and I could hear in his voice that he still wished it hadn't. I didn't tell him I'd already decided it wasn't going in any bin.

Before he left I set the skull on the windowsill, where the sodium light came through the blossoms and laid their shadows across the bone, so that for a minute it looked like something still deciding whether to run.
