Traditional sleeve with eagle, crown and rose

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo sleeve runs from the wrist up the outer arm, featuring an eagle's wings at the top, a crown, a red rose and a banner reading MOM near the wrist. The bold black outlines are filled with red, yellow, blue and green, with solid shading and a blue sky-like background behind the eagle. The arm is photographed outdoors against a pavement, grass and wheelie bins, with the subject's face not shown.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Past the last of the salt flats, where the old rail line bent toward the dead city, a girl named Idris Vell walked behind her grandmother's cart with a crown of rusted wire on her head. The cart carried one thing only, a rolled canvas painted with a red rose, and nobody in the settlement of Greyhaven had asked what it was for.

The eagle had come down the sky years before, when the drones were still grounded and the sun still rose orange through the dust. It perched on the water tower and would not leave, and the people said it had been sent to watch over the last of the seed vaults. Her grandmother said it was only hungry. Idris believed the older story, the one about the eagle carrying a message from the mother of all the wells.

They reached the vault door at dusk. Idris unrolled the canvas and held the lamp while her grandmother read the words stitched along the foot in faded thread: MOM, and under it a list of names that no longer meant anything. The rose was cracked, but it still had its colour, red as a struck match, and the crown had been fitted over the keyhole the way it always was.

The door opened on a stair going down into cool dark. Idris went first, counting the steps aloud, and at the bottom she found shelves of sealed tins, each marked with a small gold sun. Her grandmother laughed for the first time in a month. "She kept her promise," she said, and the eagle called once from the tower above, as if it had heard.
