Moonlit forest landscape on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large landscape tattoo covers the forearm, with a full moon and wispy clouds at the top, a dark line of pine trees across the middle, and a kneeling figure silhouetted beside a reflective shoreline at the bottom. The shading is soft and detailed, with smooth gradients in the sky and water and sharp contrast in the tree silhouettes. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, and the composition runs the length of the arm.

The ferryman's daughter had seen the moon come up over the pines every night of her life, but she had never seen it rise out of the water the way it did the night the boat ran aground on Sallow Bar. Her father was still in the shallows, swearing at the hull, when she climbed onto the wet sand and found the stranger there, kneeling with his hands flat on the cold shingle as though he were feeling for a heartbeat in the ground.

He did not look up when she spoke. He said only that he had been sent across to fetch the one thing the forest had lost, and that the forest was very old and did not like to be asked twice. She asked what the thing was. He pointed at the line of black pines above the tideline, the trees so tall and close that the sky above them looked like a torn sheet of smoke, and then at the moon, which hung low and pale and very near.

She went up into the trees without a lantern. The needles were soft underfoot and the air smelled of resin and cold stone, and when she reached the clearing at the top there was nothing in it but a well full of still water, reflecting every star. She knelt at its edge and saw her own face, and behind it, faint as breath, a second moon that was not in the sky at all.

In the morning her father found the boat freed and the stranger gone, and his daughter asleep on the shore with her cheek against the sand. Her palms were scored with the marks of roots. Ever after, she would not cross Sallow Bar after dark, and when the moon came up behind the pines she would turn her face away, as if someone there might still be asking her to come back.
