Cat in a striped jumper on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small upright cat wearing a striped jumper is drawn in black linework on the outer lower leg. The thin lines are used for the outline and stripes, with light grey shading across the body and the jumper. The plain white background and black heels keep the focus on the tattoo.

The lodgers at Mrs Pritchard's called the cat Admiral, though nobody could say who had given him the title. He turned up on the seafront wall in March, thin as a bootlace, and by June he was sleeping in the airing cupboard with a jumper of my late husband's folded under his chin like a pillow. The striped one, the navy and cream thing that had gone through the moths. I had meant to give it to the charity shop. Instead I found myself on Thursday mornings darning the elbows while he watched from the washing basket with the air of a man reviewing his fleet.

The Thursday trouble started with the Pritchard boy from number nine, who wanted the cat to fetch a ball. Admiral did not fetch. He sat on the lodgers' step, straight-backed in his stripes, and looked out past the harbour wall as though something important was coming in on the tide and he alone had been trusted to watch for it. The boy gave up after ten minutes and the cat looked, I thought, faintly satisfied.

On the last Thursday of August a yacht came in under the lee of the pier with a man aboard who had lost his rudder and most of his patience. He tied up badly and came up the steps asking for a bed and a sandwich, and the first thing he did was fall over the cat. Admiral did not move. He simply regarded the sailor from his step, very composed, and the sailor, to my astonishment, apologised to him.

I gave the man the back room. Admiral took the step the next morning, as ever, and I swear he had his jumper buttoned up to the chin.
