Traditional tiger head on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A snarling tiger head with bared teeth, a bulging blue-and-white eye and black stripes over orange fur, with a green serpentine form wrapped around the open jaw. Bold black outlines and shaded orange and black fur give it a classic flash look, and swirling smoke-like lines fill the lower area. Part of another colour tattoo with red and green tones appears at the top edge of the frame.

The cook had already bolted the kitchen door when the tiger came up the broken stair, dragging the smell of rain behind it. Maud Pellow did not look up from the bread. She had lived three winters in Greyhollow Castle with only rats and an old tortoise for company, and she had decided long ago that whatever came in the night was none of her business unless it wanted her bread.

It wanted her bread. It also wanted a fight, because a green snake had wound itself around the foot of the doorframe, its head lifted to meet the tiger's jaw like a grudge. The snake had lived in the cellar since the Earl's men left. Nobody had asked it to leave, and it had never once asked the tiger for anything. The two of them had been circling each other for a month, and the whole castle had grown tired of it.
Maud took a knife and a loaf and walked between them. "You can have the loaf," she said to the tiger, "and you can have the cellar," she said to the snake, "and neither of you is coming up to my hearth wearing that face."
The tiger's eye, bulging blue as a church window, held hers for a long moment. Then it lowered its great orange head and sat down in the ash, and the snake, not to be outdone, let go of the doorframe and slid back into the dark. By dawn the castle was quiet, and the hearth held two sets of tracks, one heavy and one that wandered in a long wavering line toward the cellar.
