Sphynx cat head with yellow eyes on an arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A hairless sphynx-style cat head faces to the right, with large ears, heavy black outlines and yellow eyes. The head is shaded in smooth greys with bold black areas along the brow, forehead stripes and muzzle, and a solid black circle sits above it. Colour is limited to the yellow eyes against an otherwise black and grey design, shown on skin against a dark leather background.

The apples were coming down on their own by the third week of August, which Dad said was the orchard getting tired of us. I sat on an upturned crate under the Bramley trees with a flask of tea gone cold and watched the gate, because somebody had been taking the Discoveries off the low branches before the picking crew could reach them. Mrs Pim sat on the wall beside me. She has no fur at all, only a grey hide wrinkled like a glove left out in the rain, and she has never once shown any interest in mice.

Eleven nights I watched, and eleven nights nothing happened except the owls and the slow lift of damp off the grass. On the twelfth the moon came up over the cider house, lopsided and the colour of tin, and Mrs Pim rose on the wall and went very still. Her eyes, the yellow of a lamp left burning in a window, turned from the orchard and fixed on the lane.
I followed their line. A boy was coming up the lane with a sack over one shoulder, walking the way boys walk when they think nobody can see them. I knew him. He was Tom Abell from the cottages, who had carried my shopping for a penny when he was seven and had not yet learned to be ashamed of it.
I did not shout. I walked down the rows with the cat padding beside me on her thin legs, and when Tom reached for a branch of the Discoveries he found my hand on his wrist and her eyes on his face. He put the sack down. Neither of us spoke for a while. Then he picked the biggest apple from the grass, polished it on his shirt, and held it out to the cat, who ignored it entirely and went on looking at the moon.
