Leopard and cat on a foot
Japanese · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo covers the top of the foot and ankle, showing a spotted orange cat with an open red mouth stretched above a black and white cat with green eyes. The linework is bold and black, with stippled shading on the skin around the figures. Colour is used on the orange, red and green areas, while the black and white cat sits against white skin.

Dear Ruth, you'll think I've lost my marbles, but the cat on the ninth floor has finally met its match. Mrs Okonkwo's tabby, Biscuit, has been patrolling the stairwell since August, and on Tuesday I found him flat against the fire door with his ears back, staring at the bin chute as though it owed him money. Then something came out of the chute. It was not a cat I'd seen before. Spotted like a leopard, orange as a traffic cone, it slunk low along the skirting board the way the lads slink past the bike sheds when they're up to no good.

Biscuit didn't run. He just sat down, all black and white, like a waistcoat somebody forgot to iron. I thought there'd be a fight, but the spotted one stretched out long across the lino, jaws wide, mouth as red as the inside of a plum, and hissed at him. Biscuit looked up at it the way Dad used to look at the telly when the snooker overran. Then he yawned and started washing one paw, as if to say he'd seen worse on the Thursday bus.
I went down to the lobby to tell Mr Pryce, the caretaker, who didn't even look up from his crossword. He said there's always been a bit of a ruckus on nine, and that the old man who lived there before the Okonkwos kept a book of cat drawings pinned above his telly. Every cat in the book, he said, had the same spotted cousin tucked somewhere in the corner. I asked where the book went. He said it went out with the council's clearance in 1989, along with most of the sense in this building.
I've propped the fire door open tonight with a bag of rock salt. If the spotted one wants a proper look at the view from the ninth, let him come up. Biscuit has promised to behave himself. Yours in the cold, Maureen.
