The ferry was cancelled again, so I have had three days on Eriskay with nothing to do but listen to Mr Gallacher's piano. It is an upright that came over on a fishing boat in 1958 and has not been tuned since. The middle C sticks like a bad tooth, and he won't let me touch it until the damp leaves the hammers, which by his reckoning will be spring.

Yesterday he showed me the sheet music he has been copying out for the chapel choir. Every page has the treble clef drawn the old way, with that curl at the top like a hand waving hello. Someone sprayed a peace sign on the harbour wall in the summer, and the children have started joining the two in chalk: a clef with a circle through its belly. Mrs Macinnes says it is the island's coat of arms now. She says the sea doesn't care what symbol you give it, so long as you sing to it.

I am writing because I have decided to stay until the boat leaves on Thursday, whatever the weather. Bring my good scissors if you come over, and the tuning fork from the drawer under the stairs. Mr Gallacher says he will teach me the middle C in exchange for the fork, which I think is a fair trade.
