Leo zodiac symbol on the lower leg
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a single Leo zodiac symbol, a stylised loop with a curled tail, inked in solid black on the outer side of a lower leg. The linework is smooth and even, with slight softening in the shading, and the ink reads as dark grey where it fades. The image is black and grey throughout, with a blurred indoor background and a bare foot with toes at the lower right.

Pull your stool nearer, the wind has been on this island since before the first sheep and it never tells a story straight. You want the lion? Very well. Down past the harbour wall, where the rocks go green at low tide, there is a lion that came ashore in the storm of the year the cod failed. Nobody saw him land. In the morning there was only a curled tail of driftwood tangled in the kelp, black as a boot, with a mane of dark weed around it.

Old Morag at the pier said it was a sign, and she was right, though not the way she meant. She carried the tail up the brae to burn, and that night her fire would not catch. It hissed and sulked and threw sparks at the rafters until she dragged the thing back down to the shingle and left it where the tide could decide.
The tide decided on the rocks. Every spring the sea shifted the timber a little, and every spring the lion looked more like himself, until Tam Gillies, who was seven and sat in the loop of that tail to watch the boats, swore the creature had winked at him. He grew up to keep the light on the headland, and every man who came home from the sea first looked for that curl against the dark.
So when the lamp goes out at the end of the night, look down at the water. You will see the loop of him there, rising and falling, keeping watch. That is how you know he is still on the rocks. Now hand me that cup, and mind the step on your way out.
