Treble clef on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black treble clef sits on the inner wrist of an outstretched hand. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The background is softly blurred in warm brown and beige tones, and a dark beaded bracelet with a ribbon bow rests just above the tattoo.

You hear the piano before you reach the ninth floor, one key sticking somewhere in the middle of the keyboard, a flat G that comes back every few bars like a cough in a quiet room. Flat 9C has its door propped open with a fire extinguisher, and Mr Tennant is already standing in the hall in his cardigan, holding a mug he has forgotten to drink from.

"Lift's been off since Tuesday," he says, as if you might have walked up for the exercise. "Mind the third step. The council never finished it."
The upright is older than the block. Someone has drawn a small treble clef on the inside of the fallboard in blue biro, the loops a little lopsided, the tail swept too far. He tells you his wife did it the week they moved in, and that she was never allowed near the instrument again after she got her hands on the varnish. You open the bag, lay the felt wedges along the wires, and set the fork against your knee. The G settles. Then the A, then the rest, one at a time, until the room is only the hum of strings and the traffic thirty feet below the window.
When you finish he presses a bundle of sheet music into your arms, tied with a ribbon gone the colour of weak tea. Every page carries the same clef, pencilled faintly in the margin where a hand would rest while somebody hummed along.
On the stairs going down, you hum the first bar under your breath and stop on the flat G, because it is the only note that still sounds like her.
