Frank had been pruning the same climbing rose since breakfast, and the lad from number nine had been standing at the gate for most of it, humming a tune Frank half knew. It was the one his wife used to hum over the washing line, a slow thing that climbed and then dropped back, as if it had forgotten where the bottom of the stairs was.

"You're flat," Frank said, without turning round.

"I'm trying to get the curl right," said Owen. He had a biro in one hand and had drawn on his own wrist, a long S with a loop at the top that wouldn't close. "Mum says it looks like a question mark that's given up."

Frank took the pen, licked the tip the way Margaret always told him not to, and drew a small heart inside the loop of the clef. "There. Now it's asking something nicer."

Owen laughed, then went quiet, and the two of them watched the rose drop its last petals onto the path. Frank had planted it the spring Margaret went into the hospice, and it had flowered every year since without any help from him, which he took as a kind of instruction. He reached for the secateurs and then left them where they lay.

"Play it again," he said. "The tune. From the top."
