Treble clef splash on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A treble clef sits in bare skin tone at the centre of the design, surrounded by black ink splatters and drips that fade into the skin at the edges. The clef is drawn with smooth, solid linework, and the surrounding ink is applied as heavy blotches with some spatter. The image is a close crop of the forearm against a plain light background, with only black ink and skin tones present.

Demetrios had been warned twice by the choragos to stop dripping ink on the hymn, and now the third jar had gone over, a black tide spreading across the papyrus he had spent the morning ruling. Lysandra, the girl who ground the pigment, stood in the doorway with both hands over her mouth, as if she could take the spill back.

"Leave it," he said, though his reed was shaking. He had drawn the sign first, the way his teacher taught, a curling shape like a ram's horn looped over a single ring, and he had not yet inked it in. Around it the black had already run down the margin in fingers, and he saw that the sign stood clean in the middle of the mess, the papyrus showing bare where the ink had not reached.
The choragos came at noon, looked at the sheet for a long time, and said the hymn to Apollo would be sung at the autumn festival regardless. Demetrios waited for the reprimand. Instead the old man traced the untouched shape with one dry finger and asked who had taught him to leave the sign for last.
Demetrios said nobody had. He said the sign was the part you could not get wrong by accident, and the spill had only given him a better reason to keep his hand off it. The choragos grunted, which in that house counted as praise, and carried the sheet away under his arm, the blot dark around the clean curve of it.
