Treble and bass clef heart on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tattoo shows a treble clef and a bass clef interlocked to form a heart, with two dots beside the bass clef. The bold, smooth linework sits on the upper foot near the ankle, with the toes visible at the lower left. The skin is light and the plain background is soft, so the black ink stands out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gallopers had been silent since Tuesday, and Dad said if I got the fairground organ playing its waltz by Saturday I could switch on the big wheel's lights myself. I was eleven and I believed him. The organ lived under a tarpaulin at the back of the trailer, with a cracked bellows and a bass pipe that wheezed like a sheep caught in a hedge. Nobody else would touch it.

Mrs Pell, who had run the organ with her husband until he died, came to watch me with a flask of tea. She unrolled the paper music, stiff and yellowed, and showed me a tear through the middle of the waltz. 'Stan punched that one himself,' she said. 'Every hole was a choice.' Down the margin he had drawn a treble clef and a bass clef curled into each other so they made a heart, with two dots beside the lower curl, like a wink.

I mended the tear with sticky tape and a darning needle, then punched the missing notes by torchlight, guessing where Stan's pins would have gone. The first attempt came out flat and sour. The second, on the Friday night when the wind had dropped and the wheel stood still, rolled out over the empty car park in the right key, and the bass pipe caught its breath on the low notes, right where the heart's lower curl would have sat on the page.

Mrs Pell didn't clap. She just switched on the big wheel's lights, one bulb at a time, and said Stan would have liked a bit more wheeze in the bass. I never told her I had guessed every hole. Some things you leave to the paper.
