Treble clef tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a small tattoo of a treble clef with a dot beside it, placed on the middle section of a finger. The linework is thin and the ink is dark grey, with no shading beyond the solid lines. The soft, warm-toned background shows part of a pair of lips and the adjacent fingers, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The piano in the first-class saloon has been sliding across the deck for eleven days, and you have been chasing its one stubborn A since Tilbury. Mr Okafor, the purser, says the captain will not tolerate a sour note at his table when they reach Valparaíso. You kneel with the tuning hammer between your knees, rubber wedges jammed under the castors, and listen for the beats to slow.

The swell lifts under the hull at four bells and the wires shiver. You remember the old trick: strike the fork on your knee, press its stem to the lid, and let the roll of the ship settle into the note. Beyond the portholes the Atlantic runs grey and hard, and forward a deckhand whistles the same three bars of something from Gilbert and Sullivan, wrong at the turn every time, until you want to throw the hammer at him.
On the twelfth night you lift the lid to check the damper felts and find a mark pencilled on the underside of the wood. A treble clef, cramped and careful, with a single dot set beside its curl like a full stop after a sentence nobody finished. Beneath it, in a neater hand, is a date from 1911 and the initials A.P. You think of the woman who must have knelt here before you, bracing herself against the same lurch, and of how little the sea has changed its habits.
You take out your own pencil, add a dot of your own beside the first, and tighten the last string until it sings true. When the captain's dinner bell rings, the ship is still rolling, but the A holds steady all the way through the first course.
